Study: Athletes at higher risk for developing skin cancer
Athletes may be at higher risk for developing skin cancer, according to a recent literature study published in Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach. Summer and winter outdoor athletes are exposed to higher amounts of UV light due to training and competition schedules, and sun protection strategies, such as sunscreen and sun protective clothing could help reduce that risk, according to study authors.Researchers found that these athletes are also at higher risk of sunburn, due to training schedules and environments. Summer athletes, cyclists during the Tour de Suisse, for example, were exposed to approximately eight times more than the minimal dose of UV light needed to cause sunburn. Winter sport athletes, such as skiers and snowboarders, have to deal with higher altitude sun exposure and reflections off the snow and ice, which can lead to greater exposure to the face and hands, according to the study.
